Mythbusting Science Vol. 4: Shooting Stars, Zero Gravity, and The Dark Side of the Moon
Why shooting stars aren't stars, why the Moon doesn't have a permanently dark side, and why microgravity is actually falling sideways.
Science literacy begins by questioning the convenient metaphors we tell our children. When everyday language misrepresents cosmic physics, misconceptions ossify into common culture.
Let's dissect three of the most pervasive astronomical myths.
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
DEBUNKING COSMIC LINGUISTIC MYTHS

1. 'SHOOTING STARS'
Myth: A dying star falling across the sky.
Fact: Sand-grain-sized meteoroids ionizing atmospheric air at Mach
40! The glow is incandescent compressed plasma, not a star.

2. 'THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON'
Myth: The far side of the Moon lives in eternal darkness.
Fact: Tidal locking means we see one face, but day and night cycles
bathe the far side in full sunlight every 28 Earth days!

3. 'ZERO GRAVITY IN ORBIT'
Myth: Gravity shuts off above the atmosphere.
Fact: ISS experiences 90% of Earth's gravity; it floats because of
relentless centrifugal free-fall!

Myth 1: "Shooting Stars" Fall from the Heavens
When you make a wish on a shooting star, you are wishing on a pebble or sand grain left behind by a comet.
- As Earth barrels along its orbital track at 30 km/s, it collides with interplanetary dust streams.
- The meteoroid doesn't burn from friction alone; it compresses atmospheric gas ahead of it into an incandescent shockwave reaching thousands of degrees, vaporizing the grain in a flash of ionized light.
Myth 2: The Moon Has a Permanent "Dark Side"
Pink Floyd popularized it, but orbital mechanics disproves it.
- The Moon is tidally locked to Earth: its rotational period exactly matches its orbital period around Earth (27.3 days).
- Because of this, the same hemisphere always faces Earth.
- But as the Moon circles Earth relative to the Sun, sunlight strikes every coordinate equally. During a New Moon (when the near side is pitch black to us), the far side is bathed in blinding noon sunlight!
Myth 3: Weightlessness Means Gravity Is Zero
Gravity does not have an altitude switch. At the altitude of the International Space Station (400 km), gravity is roughly —barely 10% less than on the ground. Astronauts float not because there is no gravity, but because they are in perpetual free fall around the curvature of the Earth.
