The Falling Horizon: The Real Reason Astronauts Float in Space
Astronauts do not float because there is zero gravity. They float because they are falling toward the Earth at 28,000 km/h and constantly missing it. The physics of orbital free fall.
Ask ten people why astronauts float aboard the International Space Station, and nine will answer without hesitation: "Because they are in space where there is no gravity."
This is one of the most widespread physics fallacies in human history.
At the altitude of the space station—approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) above your head—Earth's gravitational force is only about 10% weaker than it is right now beneath your desk chair. If you built a 400-kilometer ladder and stepped off the top rung, you would plummet back to Earth in seconds.
So why do astronauts float effortlessly in cabin air?

THE PHYSICS OF NEWTON'S CANNONBALL

Scenario A: Drop a ball from hand.
- Forward velocity = 0 m/s.
- Falls straight down to ground.

Scenario B: Throw a ball horizontally at 30 m/s.
- Curves downward; hits ground 50 meters away.

Scenario C: Launch a ball horizontally at 7,670 m/s (27,600 km/h)!
- The ball falls toward Earth at 9.8 m/s^2...
- BUT the spherical surface of Earth curves away beneath it at the
exact same rate (4.9 meters drop for every 8,000 meters traveled)!
- Result: The ball never gets closer to the ground. It is in ORBIT!

1. Perpetual Free Fall
Weightlessness is not the absence of gravity; it is the absence of a normal force.
- When you stand on a bathroom scale, the scale doesn't measure gravity directly. It measures the upward normal force exerted by the ground pushing back against your feet to prevent you from falling into the core.
- If you were inside an elevator when its cables snapped, you and the elevator floor would accelerate downward at the exact same rate (). If you let go of your phone, it would float beside you.
- Astronauts on the ISS are in that exact elevator—falling toward Earth forever, but with enough horizontal velocity that they continually miss the planet.
2. Microgravity, Not Zero Gravity
Because the space station has physical dimensions, different parts of the vehicle experience slightly different gravitational vectors (tidal gradients), and atmospheric drag creates tiny residual decelerations.
- Physicists use the term microgravity () rather than "zero-g" to describe this environment.
- Floating is simply the physical sensation of surrendering entirely to the curvature of spacetime.
